A person who spiked sweets with tranquilliser and gave them to children at a summer camp in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two children aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight youngsters and an older person experienced illness at the facility in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She said his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.

The man played a "treat game" with the minors, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and request they to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the young males "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the following morning.

She said Ruben had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "This year his stepson had worries about the activities, justifiably.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated materials including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his concerns.

She said the man continued to engage in the "treat game" with six youngsters that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

The legal representative said the minors were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson contacted the police once more.

She explained Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five children.
