The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
